“MLB’s Next Breakouts: 7 Under-the-Radar Players Who’ll Matter by 2026”

Every year, a player emerges from the shadows of a minor league bus to become the next face of a franchise. For every first-round phenom, there is a late-bloomer or an overlooked arm who finally found the missing piece of the puzzle. As we head into the 2026 season, a new crop of ‘sleepers’ is ready to burst onto the national scene. These aren’t the guys on the covers of the magazines—they’re the ones scouts are whispering about in the back rows of empty backfield stands. Here are 10 under-the-radar prospects you need to know before everyone else does.

1. Eury Perez

One of the main foundations for the Miami Marlins is young 22 year old prospect Eury Perez stud Starting Pitcher flying under the radar because of unfortunate Tommy John Injury that canceled his 2024 season. 2025 didn’t have the best return year with ERA at 4.25. However truly believe 2026 will be bounce back year for the stud pitcher putting his name back on the map.

Poor start beginning of the season averaging 6 runs per game in his first 4 starts but mentally pushed through never giving up  ERA dropped to 3.86.

Dominant Finish: In his final three starts of September, he was particularly sharp:

  • Sept 16 (@ COL): 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 6 K (Win)+1
  • Sept 21 (@ TEX): 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 9 K (Win)
  • Sept 27 (vs NYM): 5.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 11 K (Loss)

Key Strengths

  • Elite Extension: Due to his height, Pérez releases the ball closer to home plate than most pitchers. This makes his 98 mph fastball “feel” significantly faster to the hitter (perceived velocity).
  • Command and Poise: Unlike many young pitchers of his size, Pérez shows exceptional body control and the ability to “pound the strike zone.” He finished 2025 with a low 1.05 WHIP, indicating highly efficient control.
  • Swing-and-Miss Ability: He maintained a 28.4% Whiff Rate and a 27.3% Strikeout Rate in 2025, demonstrating that his stuff remains elite even after a major injury.
  • Athleticism: Scouts highlight his coordination and flexibility as “extremely rare” for a pitcher standing 6’8″.

Eury Perez 2026 season will be guaranteed bounce back year showcasing why’s he’s one of the best young pitchers in Baseball sadly plays for smaller market team. Genuinely appreciate dominant starting pitchers who can control the game and he has those qualities.

2. Ben Rice

Overlooked by MLB Superstar and Yankee Franchise Player Aaron Judge and star Giancarlo Stanton is Emerging Starting First Basemen is Ben Rice. Struggled in his rookie year hitting a whopping .171 but 2025 radically improved hitting .255 with 26 home runs and 65 RBI’s. Respect Rice for standing up to adversity dealing with the harsh Yankee Fans and the high pressure environment.

“We’re really proud of what Rice is and what he brings to the table,” Brian Cashman said at the Winter Meetings. “As far as I’m concerned he’s managing first base for us…but we are too left-handed, we need to find a way to balance that out.” https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/yankees-ben-rice-another-step-130000565.html

NY Yankee’s might finally have a great first Basemen that wasn’t via Free Ageny signing. Rice having the best position in the world batting around Judge and Stanton him having the least amount of pressure he just needs to deliver in his 2026 season.

Key Skills

  • Left-Handed Power: His swing is tailor-made for the “Short Porch” at Yankee Stadium.
  • Elite Quality of Contact: He consistently registers exit velocities over 93 mph, putting him in the same tier as elite power hitters like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
  • Plate Discipline: He maintained a healthy 11.4% walk rate, showing a maturity at the plate that is rare for a second-year player.

2026 season I see being similar to his 2025 campaign hitting 25+ home runs and slightly higher than 70+ RBI’s maybe higher average showing good maturity and plate discipline with extra year of experience under the belt. Yankees desperately need homegrown talent as the Steinbrenners looking cut payroll and  Ben Rice can make long term contribution.

3. Tanner Bibee

Key Figure on the Cleveland Indians Starting Rotation is young 26 year old under the radar pitcher behind number one starter Gavin Williams. 2023 Rookie Season was excellent, runner up for AL Rookie of the Year behind Gunnar Henderson. However now undervalued because he isn’t a flamethrower pitcher and didn’t have exciting 2025 pitching season.

Tanner Bibee Pitching Career

Bibee Rookie Year made significant impact being core piece to the Indian’s rotation. 10-4 record, 2.98 ERA, 142 Inning’s Pitched, 141 Strikeouts. 2024 regular season followed up strongly as the only Cleveland pitcher to record multiple starts of 7 innings pitched and ERA of 3.47. 2024 postseason made four starts with 3.45 ERA best performace was against Detroit going 7 innings deep of shut out ball.

2025 is where the dissapointments come into play ERA was decent at 4.24 and had 12 wins/11 losses. On the bright side shown flashes of greatness by throwing TWO complete games some starting rotations in total are lucky to have two shows Bibee’s pitching strength.

End of the season in September threw an outstanding 1.30 ERA, complete game shutout in his final start. Finishing the season on a strong note.

Beginning of the 2025 season Cleveland Guardians rewarded Tanner Bibee five year 48 million dollar deal, expressing there  strong beliefs as cornerstone for the Guardians future.

Key Pitching Skills

  • Elite Command: Bibee is known for “pinpoint” control. Even as his strikeout rate dipped slightly in 2025 to 21.3%, his walk rate remained excellent at 7.1%, keeping him among the league’s most efficient strike-throwers.
  • Z-Contact Suppression: He is remarkably good at preventing contact on pitches thrown inside the strike zone. Hitters often struggle to square up his pitches because of the varied movement between his four-seam (ride), sinker (run), and cutter (cut).
  • Defensive Prowess: Rare for a pitcher, Bibee is an elite defender. He won a Fielding Bible Award in 2024 and led all MLB pitchers in Defensive Runs Saved (DRS), which allows him to turn potential base hits into outs himself.
  • Workhorse Durability: He is one of the few young starters trusted to go deep into games. In 2025, he led Cleveland with 182.1 innings, including a dominant 9-inning complete game shutout in September.

2026 I believe Bibee will have strong comeback year all the great players always return back to normal. I love the way he pitches being a grinder not a flashy guy, mentality give me the ball game one of the playoffs. Looking forward to see what he accomplishes in 2026.

4. Noah Cameron

Kansas City Royals are gradually coming back to there 2014-2015 Championship selfs by building up there roster from the ground up. Drafting upcoming superstar Bobby Witt JR          annd Vinnie Pasquantino. Flying under the radar that I believe  will be future ACE of the Royals is lefty Noah Cameron.

2025 was Noah Cameron’s Rookie Year as a die hard Met Fan I was impressed how the young man pitched against us.

Cameron was untouchable for most of the afternoon, silencing the Mets’ bats before a late-game rally by New York against the Royals’ bullpen.

  • Innings Pitched: 6.2
  • Runs Allowed: 0 (Shutout)
  • Hits Allowed: 7
  • Strikeouts: 8 (Matched a career high at the time)
  • Walks: 2

That day forward continued to follow him and continued to impress me. Finished the season positing 2.99 ERA and finished 4th place for AL Rookie of the Year.

“It’s special the way he’s been competing — just every time he toes the rubber — just going after hitters and competing,” Bobby Witt Jr. said. “He’s a rookie, but he’s got that veteran presence out there. So it’s been a lot of fun to play defense behind him, watch him do it and just get better every time he goes out there.” https://www.mlb.com/news/royals-rookie-noah-cameron-wins-final-home-start-2025

Pitching Skills

  • Pinpoint Command: He is widely regarded as having the best control in the Royals’ system. He rarely beats himself with walks (7.7% BB rate).
  • Maturity & Poise: Royals manager Matt Quatraro frequently praised Cameron’s ability to “adjust on the fly.” Even when he allows early runs, he often settles in to provide length (6+ innings), a rarity for a rookie.
  • Contact Management: He excels at limiting “barrels.” In 2025, his average exit velocity allowed (87.9 mph) was among the best in the league, placing him in the 82nd percentile for limiting hard contact.

5. Bryan Woo

Arguably the best or one of the best rotations in the MLB is the Seattle Mariners pitching staff going five deep with studs from Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, George Kirby leading the charge but quietly behind them is All-Star Bryan Woo who had the best ERA out of the starters. However flys under the radar because he’s labeled the “5th starter” and being efficient pitcher. Myself on the other hand absolutely appreciates guys like this who controls the game.

2023 was his rookie year and basically average but 2024 is when Bryan Woo jumped on the scene having great Sophmore year, 9 wins with 2.89 ERA. Breaking a record in 2024 by throwing first pitch strikes to 72.9 % of batters.

Standout Performances

  • The Perfect Game Bid (Sept 11 vs. Padres): Woo’s most iconic start of 2024. He carried a perfect game into the 7th inning against a high-powered San Diego lineup. It was broken up by a Fernando Tatis Jr. home run with one out in the 7th. He finished with 6.2 IP, 2 hits, and 5 strikeouts.
  • The “Maddux” Effort (May 21 @ Yankees): In just his third start back from injury, he shut down the Yankees in the Bronx, throwing 6.0 shutout innings on only 77 pitches. He allowed just 2 hits and 0 walks.

2025 season was extremely impressive that he became American League All-Star. In addition to being 5th in the AL CY Young Race. Best performance of the 2025 season was masterpiece against the Yankees carrying no hitter till the 8th inning.

  • 15-7 record
  • 2.94 ERA
  • 186 Inning Pitched
  • 198 strikeouts

If 2024 was the “proof of concept” and 2025 was the “breakout,” then 2026 is officially the year of the Ace. Bryan Woo enters the new season no longer as the Mariners’ “underrated fifth starter,” but as a legitimate Cy Young heavyweight and a top-10 pitcher in all of baseball.

6. Maikel Garcia

“Every great team needs a heartbeat, and while Witt Jr. may be the face of the Royals, Maikel Garcia is their soul. He is the throwback player who wins games in the margins—with a barehanded play at the hot corner, a 10-pitch walk that tires out an ace, or a perfectly timed swipe of second base. As we head into 2026, Garcia isn’t just playing for personal accolades; he’s playing to prove that the Royals’ 2025 resurgence was just the beginning. The secret is out in Kansas City, and by mid-summer 2026, it will be out everywhere else.”

Maikel Garcia if he played for East Coast or West Coast big market team he’ll be a rising star but plays for the Kansas City Royals.

The “Invisible” Value: Gold Glove Defense

In 2025, Garcia officially moved out of the “prospect” shadow and into the “elite” tier. He didn’t just play third base; he redefined the position for the Royals.

  • The Hardware: Garcia captured his first AL Gold Glove in 2025.
  • The Metric: He led all AL third basemen in Outs Above Average (OAA) with a stunning +18, trailing only Ke’Bryan Hayes for the best defensive mark at the position in all of MLB.
  • The Skill: His “vacuum” hands and internal clock—likely inherited from his cousin, Royals legend Alcides Escobar—made him a one-man wrecking crew on the left side of the infield.

The 2025 “Swing Revolution”

Before 2025, the knock on Garcia was his “worm-burner” tendency—hitting the ball hard but directly into the dirt. Last season, he fixed it.

  • Launch Angle Adjustment: By adding a small toe tap and centering his weight to avoid “crashing” forward, Garcia transformed from a 7-home run hitter into a 16-home run threat.
  • Statcast Darling: Garcia ranked in the 98th percentile for Squared-Up rate. He rarely misses the “sweet spot,” leading to a career-high 39 doubles and an even .800 OPS—a massive 187-point jump from 2024.

The Toughest Out in the League

Garcia is a “throwback” hitter who makes pitchers work for every single out.

  • Elite Contact: His 12.5% strikeout rate was one of the lowest in the majors (top 3%), making him nearly impossible to punch out even in high-leverage 0-2 counts.
  • Plate Discipline: He jumped his walk rate to 9.3%, proving that his “under the radar” value isn’t just about flashy plays, but about high-IQ on-base skills.

In December 2025, the Kansas City Royals officially made Maikel Garcia a cornerstone of their franchise by signing him to a major 5-year contract extension guaranteed 57.5 million for five years. 2026 love to see Garcia make significant impact help leading to a playoff race.

7. Xavier Edwards

Being a NY Mets fan watch good amount of Marlins games as they sadly killed our playoff hopes last week of the season. Credit to them they have a solid team with good group of young talent including underrated Second Basemen, Xavier Edwards.

While the baseball world is often obsessed with 500-foot home runs, Edwards is a throwback to the “pure hitter” archetype. After a historic 2024 (where he hit for the cycle) and a solid 2025, he has solidified himself as a high-contact, high-speed weapon for the Miami Marlins.

2025 Season: The “Iron Man” of Contact

Edwards was one of the few Marlins to play a full, healthy season, providing a masterclass in bat-to-ball skills that are becoming rare in the modern game.

  • Batting Average- .283
  • Hits- 159 top 25 in NL
  • Stolen Bases- 27
  • WAR- 3.2 Top 10(2B)
1. Elite Bat-to-Ball Skills

Edwards possesses a preternatural ability to put the barrel on the ball. He doesn’t swing for the fences; he swings for the gaps.

2. 80-Grade Speed & “Base-Stealing Terror”

Scouts have long graded Edwards’ speed at a 70 or 80 on the 20-80 scale, and he used every bit of it in 2025.

  • Stolen Base Threat: He swiped 27 bases in 2025. Combined with his breakout 2024 (31 steals in just 70 games), he has established himself as a perennial 30-40 steal threat.
  • The Triples Machine: His speed allows him to turn routine doubles into triples; he even holds a Marlins record for 3 triples in a single game.
3. Defensive Range at the “Keystone”

While he spent time at Shortstop earlier in his career, Edwards found his home at Second Base in 2025, where his athleticism truly shines.

  • Range (Outs Above Average): He finished the year in the 77th percentile for OAA.
  • The “Quick Pivot”: Analysts highlight his “twitchy” footwork and quick hands, allowing him to turn double plays with elite efficiency.

4. Switch-Hitting Versatility

Edwards is a true switch-hitter, equally comfortable from both sides of the plate.

  • Platoon Neutrality: In 2025, he showed significant improvement against right-handed pitching, posting an OPS increase of +34% compared to his career norms.
  • Leadoff Mentality: His ability to spoil pitches and draw walks makes him the perfect spark plug at the top of the Marlins’ lineup.

“If the modern MLB is a power-lifting competition, Xavier Edwards is the world-class fencer. He doesn’t need to crush the ball to beat you; he just needs to put it in play. In 2025, he proved that a .280 hitter who doesn’t strike out and steals 30 bases is still one of the most valuable assets a team can have. For 2026, don’t be surprised if he flirts with the .300 mark and a Gold Glove nomination.”

8. Carlos Narvaez

It is incredibly rare for a player to jump directly across the fiercest rivalry in sports and instantly become a fan favorite, but Carlos Narváez pulled it off in 2025.

Initially viewed as a “throw-in” trade piece to help the Yankees balance their roster, Narváez transformed from a “phantom player” in the Bronx to a statistical powerhouse in Boston. Here is the under-the-radar story of how the Red Sox found their catcher of the future in their rival’s backyard.

The Yankees Era: A Decade of Patience

Narváez was the ultimate “slow burn” success story for New York. Signed as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela in 2015, he spent nine seasons grinding through the Yankees’ farm system.

  • The “Phantom” Debut: In early 2024, the Yankees called Narváez up to the majors for the first time. He spent three days in the dugout, never saw the field, and was sent back down—earning the frustrating title of a “phantom ballplayer.”
  • The Blocked Path: Despite being named the “Best Defensive Catcher” in the Yankees system by Baseball America, he was stuck behind Austin Wells and Jose Trevino.
  • The Trade Chip: On December 11, 2024, the Yankees traded him to Boston for pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz. At the time, the headlines were about Boston acquiring ace Garrett Crochet; Narváez was considered minor depth.

2025: The Breakout in Boston

Just like in the book Outliers, Narváez took advantage of the opportunity when starting catcher, Conor Wong fractured his finger. Demanded Carlos into the “Spotlight” quickly.

“I thought we were getting a defensive catcher that was going to grow into, probably, an everyday player with time, not this year,” Cora said after Wednesday’s 10-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. “But Connor goes down with an injury and he took the baton and he’s still running with it.”

https://nesn.com/2025/07/alex-cora-impressed-by-red-sox-rookie-smashing-expectations/

Thanks to Red Sox legend Jason Varitek mentored Carlos behind the plate that lead to him becoming #1 starting catcher and ending 2025 as Gold Glove Finalist. Lastly 6th as AL Rookie of Year as his batting average didn’t match up till his great catching ability.

Boston Red Sox got an absolute steal and potential All-Star. I can see the Rox Fans loving him as he represents the Blue Collar workers as he played with meniscus tear second half of the year.

Elite Defensive Profile (The “Gold Glove” Tier)

Narváez’s primary value comes from his work behind the plate. By mid-2025, he was statistically one of the best defensive players in baseball.

  • Blocking-His most standout skill is his ability to keep the ball in front of him.
  • Framing- He possesses “quiet hands” that allow him to steal strikes at the bottom of the zone
  • Arm Talent & Release: Described as having a “Plus Arm” with a very quick release.
  • Game Planning: Pitchers (including veterans like Sonny Gray) have publicly praised his preparation. He is known for “sticking to the plan” and his deep understanding of opposing hitters

Offensive Development

Coming into 2025, the knock on Narváez was that he was a “defense-first backup.” He shattered that narrative by providing unexpected pop from the bottom of the order.

  • Pull-Side Power: He maximizes his 5’11” frame with a short, uppercut swing designed for pull-side home runs. He finished 2025 with 15 HRs, showing he can punish mistakes.
  • Hard Contact: When he connects, it’s loud. He maintained an Average Exit Velocity (91.1 mph) in the 75th percentile of the league.
  • Line-Drive Approach: Red Sox manager Alex Cora noted Narváez’s ability to “hit a line drive to right field whenever he feels like it,” showcasing an all-fields maturity that prevents pitchers from simply pitching him away.
  • Plate Discipline: He possesses a high “baseball IQ” at the plate, maintaining a professional 8.5% Walk Rate and rarely chasing outside the zone (39th percentile for Chase Rate).
Looking Ahead to 2026

As Narváez recovers from his October 9 cleanup surgery, the Red Sox view him not as a “trade piece” or an “addition,” but as the primary voice behind the plate.

While the Yankees received a high-ceiling arm in Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz (who climbed into Top 100 prospect lists this year), the Red Sox secured a pre-arbitration starting catcher under team control until 2031. In the high-stakes chess match of the AL East, Boston found a “queen” in a move everyone else thought was a pawn sacrifice.

9. Sal Frelick

Milwaukee Brewers such well run organization since the Counsell Era have so much winning consistency thanks to the face of the Franchise Christian Yelich, William Contreras & rising star Jackson Chourio. Three of them grab all the headlines while “under the radar impact” player Sal Frelick shows he’s foundational piece for the Brewers

Shows success through his amazing Gold Glove Caliber defense and upgraded contact-first hitting ability.

Contact hitting Golden Glovers are so important to Baseball Teams they really set the tone in the lineup and definitely will  help the Brewers continue to win in the future. Brings back those old school 1980’s players that hardcore fans miss.

2025: The “Hit Collector” Breakthrough

Frelick took a significant step forward in 2025, evolving from a glove-first prospect into a reliable top-of-the-order threat.

  • Statistical Surge: He finished the 2025 season with a .288 AVG and a .351 OBP, a massive jump from his .259 average in 2024.
  • Sneaky Power: After hitting only 2 home runs in 2024, he finished 2025 with 12 HRs, proving he could punish pitchers who underestimated his 5’8″ frame.
  • The “Small Ball” King: Along with teammate Caleb Durbin, Frelick was central to the Brewers’ aggressive baserunning style, tallying 19 stolen bases and 76 runs scored.

10. Emmet Sheehan

Impressive to me the Los Angeles Dodgers with the billions of dollars they spend in free agency having late round picks they continue to draft & develop extroardinally well. Emmet Sheehan is one of those prospects.

6th Round Pick to Future ACE

Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Sheehan 6th round of the 2021 MLB Draft now looking now is a major steal as they drafted a  future ACE.  Shown glimpses of his pitching brilliance for his  six inning no hitter in his debut. However threw close to 5 ERA at 4.92 and NLDS he struggled.

2024 was shut down for the season because of the god given right Tommy John Surgery.

The 2025 “Post-Surgery” Explosion

Sheehan’s 2025 return was one of the most successful “comeback” stories of the season. After missing over a year following an internal brace procedure in May 2024, he didn’t just survive; he dominated.

  • Ace-Level Efficiency: In 73.1 innings of work, he posted a 2.82 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP. For context, those are “Cy Young finalist” type numbers over a full season.
  • The Strikeout Surge: He maintained a 10.9 K/9, showing that his velocity and “whiff” ability were completely intact. He even struck out 10 batters in 7 scoreless innings against the Giants in late September.
  • Elite Control: One of the biggest surprises was his walk rate (2.7 BB/9), which was a significant improvement over his 2023 rookie marks.

The Skills: “Ace Stuff” in a Deep Rotation

Sheehan is unique because his “under-the-radar” status is mostly due to the Dodgers’ superstar-heavy roster. If he were on almost any other team, he would be a frontline starter.

  • The “Rising” Fastball: His 96 mph heater ranks in the 71st percentile for velocity, but its high Induced Vertical Break makes it “rise” over bats, resulting in a .214 batting average against.
  • The Elite Slider: His slider held hitters to a .162 batting average—statistically mirroring elite closers like Josh Hader. It boasts a lethal 44% whiff rate.
  • Extension King: Using his 6’5″ frame, Sheehan releases the ball closer to the hitter than most, making his pitches feel much faster than the radar gun suggests.

Privilege pitching the star dudded pitching rotation learning from the future hall of famer Clayton Kershaw, Yamamoto, Ohtani, Blake Snell, Glasnow and Roki Sasaki. Take advantage of every opportunity absorb every information possible to become future All-Star and one of the best Starting Pitchers for  next decade.

The “Quiet Before the Storm”

The beauty of baseball lies in its lack of a clock; it moves at its own pace, and so does the development of its future stars. For the ten players on this list, 2026 isn’t just another year on the calendar—it is the year the world finally catches up to what the scouts in half-empty backfields have known for months.

Right now, these names are just lines in a spreadsheet or whispers in a front office. They are the ‘sleepers’ whose bats sound a little louder in the morning air and whose fastballs look a little faster than the radar gun suggests. But the window for discovery is closing. As spring training gives way to the heat of the summer, the anonymity these players enjoy will vanish, replaced by the roar of the crowd and the weight of high expectations.

In 2026, household names like Eury Perez and Ben Rice will grab the headlines, but history tells us that the most impactful stories are often the ones we didn’t see coming. Whether it’s the late-round pick who finally found his rhythm or the pitcher who conquered his own health, these ten are ready to step out of the shadows. Watch them now, while they still belong to the dreamers and the scouts—because by October, they’ll belong to everyone
